South Lanarkshire asked to fall silent in memory of key workers who have lost their lives

South Lanarkshire residents are being asked to fall silent in memory of the key workers who have lost their lives in the fight against coronavirus.

Since the outbreak began, 21,092 people in the UK have died from the virus, including more than 100 key workers.

At 11am today (Tuesday, April 28), a minute's silence will be held across the UK to honour those NHS and care staff as well as people working in transport industry and other key workers who have died.

UNISON, the Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Midwives last week called for the silence to be held to coincide with International Workers' Memorial Day on April 28.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is among those encouraging everyone to join the silence.

She said: "The silence will provide an opportunity to pay tribute to those who have died as a result of their work to serve, care for and save others and it will be a further reminder that of all the duties Government bares during a situation like this, the most vital is our obligation to keep care and health workers safe."

UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis said it would be “the ultimate tribute to remember workers who’ve lost their lives and put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe and vital services running.

“Every year, the sacrifice of workers around the world is recognised, but this year has a special significance because of the pandemic.

“Thousands of key staff are on the frontline while the rest of us are in lockdown. That’s why we’ve issued this call for the whole country to take part and remember the sacrifices they’ve made. The best tribute we can all pay them is to stay inside to protect the NHS.”
