South Lakes Safari Zoo has some festive arrivals - and people are getting very excited

They are the stars of Christmas pantomimes up and down the land and are the creatures who pull Santa's sleigh.

It's fair to say they are animals who are synonymous with the festive season.

So, it's not surprising that their arrival at South Lakes Safari Zoo in Ulverston, Cumbria, has been greeted with such excitement.

The baby reindeer have been named Cinnamon and Treacle as a nod to their festive pedigree.

They will live a new purpose-built enclosure at the zoo, joined by their mum Alice and dad Clover, who will live with them until March.

The reindeer family arrived in October but have been segregated from the public to allow them time to settle in.

For the first time, they will meet the public this weekend with a meet-and-greet and an opportunity to eat carrots.

Anna Gillard, director at the Safari Zoo, said: "Everyone loves them, staff were very excited when they arrived.

"They all came together and will spend Christmas together at the zoo.

"They needed a few weeks to settle in, but people will be able to feed them and see them from this weekend.

"In March, the mums will return and the calves will live here on their own as they will be old enough to look after themselves."
