A South Korean naval vessel Thursday locked its fire control radar onto a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's patrol plane during a monitoring mission near the Sea of Japan, Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya told reporters on Friday.
The radar lock-on occurred around 3 p.m. on Thursday in the Sea of Japan off the Noto Peninsula in central Japan, according to Iwaya. The lock-on "is a dangerous act that might have led to an unanticipated situation," he stressed. A fire control radar is utilized against a selected target.
The government lodged a protest against the South Korean government over the issue through diplomatic channels.
