SEOUL -- A South Korean court has ordered the seizure of payments owed to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. by a South Korean firm to compensate former requisitioned workers from the Korean Peninsula, an attorney representing the plaintiffs revealed on Wednesday.
According to the attorney, the Anyang Branch of Suwon District Court ordered the seizure and collection of about 853.2 million won (about 80.5 million yen) worth of payments owed to MHI by the South Korean firm LS Mtron Ltd.
A South Korean court ruling ordering MHI to pay compensation to former requisitioned workers has already been finalized.
Procedures to liquidate MHI trademarks and patents are currently underway in the country.
The latest order might expedite the enforcement process because it eliminates the need to liquidate assets through such procedures as auctions.
The attorney said if MHI refuses to comply with the latest order, the receivables would be collected directly from LS Mtron.
MHI will likely refuse to receive the documents related to the order and the court will subsequently launch a special procedure through which the documents will be considered served once they have been posted online for a certain period of time.
However, MHI can delay the procedure by filing an immediate appeal against the court's decision.
