South Korea says it fired warning shots at Russian warplanes

South Korea's Defense Ministry says the country's fighter jets fired hundreds of warning shots at Russian military aircraft that entered its airspace early Tuesday, Reuters reports.

Why it matters: This would be the first time a Russian warplane has violated South Korean airspace, as South Korea's Yonhap news agency notes — though Russia later issued a denial of the claim, per AFP.

Details: A South Korean official told AP that 3 Russian military planes entered South Korea’s air defense identification zone off its east coast with 2 Chinese military planes before 1 Russian plane entered the country’s territorial sky and violated its airspace. It wasn’t immediately clear whether this action was deliberate.

What's next: The South Korean Defense Ministry said the government would lodge official complaints about the violations with China and Russia, per Reuters.
