South Korea government to fund newspapers

A controversial press law has been introduced in South Korea in order, supposedly, to ensure that newspapers reflect diverse public opinion. According to Kim Joo-eun, general secretary of the Korea Commission for the Press, "the government had no other choice but to step in to help promote varied opinions and ensure fair competition because several large newspaper companies have dominated the domestic newspaper market." Under the Newspaper Law, the press commission is allowed to provide selected newspapers with financial support. Korea's major daily papers, including the Chosun Ilbo and the Dong-A Ilbo, argue that the law violates the principles of a market economy. (Via times.hankooki.com)
