South Korea fire: Five dead and many injured or trapped after fire tears through hospital

At least five people have been killed and dozens injured with a fire tearing through a hospital in South Korea that left people trapped, it is reported.

There have been around 50 firefighters and 20 pumps which have been tackling the blaze at the Haksan Building, that had a hospital on the fourth floor, in Gwango-dong, Icheon-si, with five dead so far and there are around 41 people injured.

Firefighters were working to free people that were trapped with around 30 people initially reported to have been unable to get out of the hospital.

Emergency services arrived around 10.30am on Friday and fire crews began putting out the fire with the cause is not yet known.

A fire service spokesperson said: "The dialysis hospital is on fire and we are rescuing patients."

The dialysis hospital is on the fourth level of a five-floor building, reported KBS News.

It took fire crews one hour and 10 minutes to put out the fire with it confirmed that there are no more people trapped inside the hospital.

Five people, including dialysis patients and nurses, died in the fire, while 41 people suffered minor injuries from inhaling smoke.

Footage from the scene show several fire fighters with extendable platforms which are being used to evacuate patients from the fire.

Medical staff can be seen outside with patients in wheel chairs who are being taken to other hospitals.

It is reported that there were 46 people in the building including patients and staff with many having been trapped inside the building, while some had gone up onto the roof of the building to await rescue.

A fire service official earlier said that crews will try to get through to the patients in the building as soon as it is safe to do after securing a path.

The Haksan Building has a restaurant and office on the first floor, an oriental medicine clinic and a simulator golf course on the second and third floors, and the hospital is on the fourth level.

At this stage authorities believe that the fire started with the simulator golf course on the third floor, and it is known that there were many patients inside the hospital on the 4th floor.
