South Gloucestershire in Tier 3: District joins North Somerset and Bristol City in highest tier

Alongside neighbouring areas, Bristol City and North Somerset, South Gloucestershire has been confirmed as heading into Tier 3.

All three areas have seen rising levels of coronavirus cases and Covid fatalities in recent weeks.

In a previous statement, outlining the varying restrictions in the different tiers, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "In particular, in Tier 1 people should work from home wherever possible.

"In Tier 2, alcohol may only be served in hospitality settings as part of a substantial meal.

"In Tier 3, indoor entertainment, hotels and other accommodation will have to close, along with all forms of hospitality except for delivery and takeaways."

A North Somerset Council spokesperson said on Monday its discussions with the Government suggested each regional health system would have one restriction level.

In the case of our region, that would mean Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire being in the same tier.

“The higher rates of infection we are still seeing in Bristol and South Gloucestershire alongside our own increasing infection rates mean it is likely we will find ourselves in one of the higher levels of alert after December 2,” the spokesperson said.

The Government website says: ""The overall picture remains concerning with very high case rates overall (325/100,000) and in the over 60s (208/100,000).

"Positivity is 10.4%. Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset are part of a wider travel to work area and thus form a natural geographic grouping, separate to the surrounding area."
