South Dublin County Council spends over €10 million removing illegal dumping since introduction of bin charges

South Dublin County Council have spent over €10m removing illegal dumping since control of waste collection services were privatised eight years ago.

The council relinquished control of waste management services in 2011 and in the following six years spent an average of €1.7m a year tackling illegal dumping.

The figures, which cover the period from 2012 to 2017, were revealed at the council's monthly meeting on Monday following a motion raised by Councillor Mark Ward.

The North Clondalkin/Lucan/Palmerstown rep called for the return of waste collection services to the council in an effort to reduce fly-tipping across the county.

He said: "In our county it is not unusual to have four or five different operators collecting waste from the one street. This is not environmentally sustainable.

"In the interim the bin waiver scheme that was previously promised needs to be introduced.

"I also have a pending motion calling for South Dublin to reintroduce a large junk collection on the run up to next Halloween.

"We seen at first hand the way our areas where left after Halloween and a junk collection prior to this season would eliminate a lot of the more hazardous material that are burnt of the bonfires."

Dublin Live has contacted South Dublin County Council for comment.
