Beaches along large stretches of the NSW South Coast have been closed for swimming after days of heavy rain led to water pollution.
Eurobodalla Shire Council said all beaches in the area would be closed after the rain washed in debris from recent bushfires that had devastated the area this summer.
A council spokesman said the heavy rain had resulted in poor water quality across the more than 140 kilometres of coast.
"Some beaches may have been affected by sewer overflows," the spokesman said.
"Many of Eurobodalla's rivers, bays and beaches are covered with burnt twigs and branches and a fair amount of litter."
It is not known when beaches in the area will reopen to the public.
The closed beaches include Corrigans Beach, Durras North and South Durras, Bengello Beach, Moruya.
All beaches in the area are closed between Batemans Bay and Akolele.
The closure came after Batemans Bay received more than 140 millimetres of rain in 24 hours on Monday.
A further 40 millimetres was recorded the following day.
Large parts of the South Coast were inundated with water, as a large weather system brought flooding and heavy rain to most of the NSW coast.
The council spokesman said Eurobodalla Council and the NSW government were carrying out regular testing of water quality.
"Swimming is not recommended while the water remains dirty," the spokesman said.
"The debris will continue to accumulate but, over time, nature will take its course, and Eurobodalla's waterways...will be cleansed of organic matter."
The council said it would make an announcement once beaches would be safe.
