What’s new: A nuclear power plant in Taishan, South China’s Guangdong province has disputed media reports about a possible leak, saying all environmental indicators remain “normal.”
“So far, data obtained from continuous environmental monitoring has showed that all environmental indicators at the Taishan nuclear plant and the surrounding vicinity remain at a normal level,” the nuclear power plant’s operator, Taishan Nuclear Power Joint Venture Co. Ltd., said in a statement (link in Chinese) Saturday.
The statement said that both the No. 1 and the No. 2 units at the nuclear power plant are in service. It added that the No. 2 unit finished its latest round of maintenance on schedule and resumed transmitting electricity to the grid on Thursday.
The background: On Sunday, CNN reported that the U.S. government had spent the past week assessing a report of a leak at the Taishan plant, after a French company, Framatome, which partially owns and operates the plant, warned of an “imminent radiological threat.”
However, both the French company and the U.S. government believed that the facility had not yet reached a “crisis level,” the CNN report said, citing anonymous sources.
The Taishan nuclear power plant is owned by China General Nuclear Power Corp. and Electricite de France SA (EDF), whose subsidiary is Framatome SA.
