South Carolina (1-2) vs. Missouri (2-1) Game Preview
Why South Carolina Will Win
Ryan Hilinski is the real deal.
It’s one of the main positives out of a season that’s looking more and more like like it’s going to be a rough struggle. The freshman held his own in the loss to Alabama, throwing 57 times for 327 yards and two scores. He’s more than just the guy to give Gamecocks hope for the future; he’s ready to produce right now.
The Missouri secondary has been brilliant so far, but that’s partially because it hasn’t played anyone who can consistently throw. West Virginia’s passing attack is okay, but it gave up three picks. So far, Hilinski has ben a solid decision-maker.
The offense has the pieces to keep up. It’s getting production out of the ground attack to help out Hilinski, but …
Why Missouri Will Win
The Gamecocks are doing a lot of dinking and dunking. Hilinski is certainly a keeper, and he’s been great so far, but the passing game overall is averaging fewer than ten yards per completion. Missouri is able to hit the home run, and South Carolina’s secondary is suspect.
Throw out the game against Alabama – that group would put up 300 yards on the Miami Dolphins … maybe, but not really – but North Carolina’s Sam Howell looked fantastic in the comeback win in the season opener.
Kelly Bryant has been a wee bit erratic, but he’s been accurate, and he got the downfield passing attack working in last week’s tune-up blowout over SE Missouri State.
There’s been a massive difference in opponents so far – mainly because the Gamecocks got Bama – but the Mizzou defense really has been solid. It gave up a few big runs in the loss to Wyoming, but it’s been able to clamp down so far, especially on third downs.

What’s Going To Happen
The Tiger defense isn’t as good as the stats, but it’s strong enough to come up with a good performance against home.
South Carolina has the athletes and talent on defense to get to Bryant and make him work a bit, but Missouri will find a good offensive balance early, and the secondary will hold up better. The Tigers will get the big plays the Gamecocks won’t.
