An 11-year-old boy died saving his little sister's life by pushing her out of the way of an out-of-control car, his family have said.
La'Darious Wylie, 11, was waiting for the bus to school with his sister Sha'Vonta, seven, when the car veered towards them on 27 October, according to The Charlotte Observer.
He was hit and died a day later in hospital in Charlotte.
His mother, Elizabeth McCrorey, who has six other children, told the newspaper that La'Darious "knew to look out for" Sha'Vonta.
And she made the decision to donate his organs, she said, "so that other children might survive injury or illness".
The driver of the car, Michelle Johnson, 57, was arrested two days after the incident and charged with felony hit-and-run resulting in death.
She was released on Friday on $25,000 bail. If convicted, she could face up to 25 years in prison.
Incredibly, Ms McCrorey said that she "doesn't hate her" for what happened - but just "wishes she had stopped".
The boy's aunt, Felicia Mobley, told CBS-affiliate WBTV that they are “coping with it day by day.”
"We can't really say what's gonna lie ahead," she said. "We just dealing with it on a daily basis because when it's a tragedy like this - we just have to deal with it day by day."
She added: "He saved his sister. And he ended up being the one that's where he is now."
The family now hope that the city's Brooklyn Park - an old recreation center with a playground where La'Darious used to play - will be rebuilt in his name.
They have also started a memorial fund to help with funeral arrangements. The description reads: "He was loved by all that knew him.
"He played football, a very smart young man that had his whole life ahead of him. His mother Liz is going through something that no mother should."
