South Bristol boy pens adorable letter to businesses to support his youth football team

An 11-year-old boy from south Bristol has penned heartfelt a note to businesses in a bid to find a sponsor for his youth football team.

Jack Geraghty, from Knowle, wrote the heartwarming letter in a bid to encourage businesses to sponsor his football team, Mendip Broadwalk FC U'12's so they can buy new track jackets, waterproofs, and rucksacks ahead of the start of the new season in September.

Claire Geraghty, Jack's mum, has been fundraising over the past few months alongside another player's mother, to try and find the money for new kit so the team can keep up with  their competitors.

She said: "The team obviously have their kits, but when they turn up to matches most of the other teams have jackets, waterproofs, bags, the lot and they are generally sponsored by local businesses.

"It's not the be-all and end-all, but with a team of young players they really want to look the part and feel like they're a proper team.

"We were going to matches week in and week out where everyone they were playing against was all in matching jackets and it got to the point where me an another mum just thought right, enough is enough.

"We've been fundraising really hard, we recently had a quiz night and a raffle, but that money can only go so far and isn't enough to support the entire team.

"We've written off to almost every business we could think of but haven't really heard anything back.

"We were all sitting writing thank you letters from the football team to people who had donated raffle prizes and Jack was practising his writing alongside us when he asked if he could write a letter from him and his friends to try and find sponsors."

"His sister Charlotte has been raising money for the Cots for Tots Appeal since she was five years old and won the Bristol Post Gold Star Award in 2015, so we've learnt that if our children ask to do something we should encourage them to do it."

After witnessing the success that could come with reaching people via Twitter for her daughter's fundraising, Claire decided to share Jack's letter online in a bid to reach out to businesses in South Bristol.

Claire said: "We had asked the team what they wanted to do to fundraise and they said a sponsored walk, which they are doing at the weekend, but with the season creeping closer we're looking for a business or donors who could support us.

"Jack really wanted to do something that came from him and the team - they all love playing together and want to look the part just like most of the other teams they play against.

"If we were to get a business sponsor their logo could go on all of the jackets and bags - it would be good advertising for them and be a great boost for the team too."
