South Bridge incident: Man in hospital after being knocked down by car in Edinburgh city centre

A man has been taken to hospital after being knocked down by a car on South Bridge in Edinburgh city centre.

The incident took place shortly before 3.30pm on Saturday and led to the road being sealed off by police.

This caused major delays for traffic in the area and public transport was diverted.

A police cordon was put in place near the junction with Chambers Street before being lifted later in the evening.

It's not currently known how serious the man's injuries are.

A Police Scotland spokesman said they had responded to a "serious" road accident on South Bridge.

He said: "The incident happened around 3.17pm and involved a male pedestrian and a car.

"Emergency services are in attendance and the road is currently closed. Inquiries are ongoing."
