South Belfast parade traffic warning issued by PSNI

The police have issued a traffic warning over a planned parade in South Belfast.

The PSNI have said there could be disruptions to traffic between 7pm and 9.30pm on Friday, July 2, due to a parade taking place in the Sandy Row, Donegall Road, Shaftsbury Square, Botanic Avenue, Dublin Road, Tates Avenue and Lisburn Road areas.

Alternative routes will be available, but road drivers are being asked to plan their journeys in advance.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Road users are advised to plan for potential traffic disruption in the Sandy Row, Donegall Rd, Shaftsbury Sq, Botanic Av, Dublin Rd, Tates Ave and Lisburn Rd areas of South Belfast this evening from 7pm through to 9.30pm due to a parade.

"Alternative routes are available, but road users are asked to plan their journeys in advance."

It comes following Thursday night's parades in East Belfast to commemorate the Battle of the Somme which saw hundreds take to the streets to show their support.

A steel wall was put in place by the PSNI between Short Strand and Albertbridge Road to stop any potential disorder and the evening passed peacefully.

It is estimated around 1,900 people, split into three smaller groups for Covid regulations, took part in the parade.

According to the Parades Commission, it was one of more than 90 parades taking place across Northern Ireland on Thursday.
