South Belfast GAA team runs 1,000km for NHS

A women's GAA team has run 1,000km to support the NHS.

South Belfast's Bredagh GAC's senior ladies team ran 1,000 km, and raised £,1327 in just a fortnight.

Captain Clare Timoney said it began as a way to keep motivated in lockdown.

She said: "Our manager Gerry Rogers then suggested we take a two week period and if every girl ran six 3km runs we would hit 1000km and if we donated a £1 for every kilometre we did this could go towards the NHS.

"This certainly provided extra motivation for the girls, allowing Bredagh ladies to do our little bit for the NHS."

The challenge ignited competition, as players shared their best times.

She said it helped bring the team together - and hopes to see others follow in the their footsteps.

Clare added: "Everyone is finding isolation difficult but this was a way of keeping the team connected. The mental and physical benefits of running are well known which is so important during this time.

"We have enjoyed success over the last few years and that has come from having an extremely competitive bunch so the runs were always going to draw competition.

"I believe there are other clubs and teams running 1,000km in various time frames which is great to see. We will have to get our heads together for the next challenge."

The challenge to run 1,000km has now been taken up by other age-groups at Bredagh GAC in an effort to raise even more money for the NHS.
