South Belfast drugs in suitcase find leads to more suspected narcotics in suitcase

Police have found another cannabis haul stashed in luggage after stopping a man carrying a drug filled suitcase.

Officers from the Belfast District Support Team (DST) seized the “suspected herbal cannabis believed to be worth in excess of £400,000”.

The class B drugs, they say, were located during a number of follow-up searches in South Belfast after police stopped a male “carrying a suitcase filled with suspected herbal cannabis on the Lisburn Road on Thursday 16 January”.

Inspector James Murphy said: “These latest property searches are as a direct result of the initial incident last week. These seizures mean that the DST have now removed cannabis with a total estimated value of just over £500,000 from the community in the past week.

“We remain fully committed to tackling the scourge of drugs in our communities and we will continue to pro-actively investigate and carry out searches linked to the drugs trade. I would repeat our appeal to anyone who can help us identify suspects or lines of enquiry to call the non-emergency number 101.”

The police added that potential witnesses can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

It is understood a 27-year-old male arrested on Thursday, January 16 was subsequently charged with a range of drugs offences, including being concerned in the supply of class B drugs, as well as immigration offences. He appeared in court on Friday, January 17 and was remanded into custody.
