South Ayrshire tennis duo return to heroes' reception after Special Olympics medal haul

A tennis ace completed his dream week by bagging Special Olympic gold just days before turning 21.

Jack Dickson served up a medal double in Abu Dhabi and returned to a hero’s welcome in Troon.

The former Struthers Primary pupil, who has excelled at sport despite living with autism, was hailed for his efforts in the Games.

Proud mum Jean told the Ayrshire Post : “It’s absolutely amazing.

“Jack has worked so hard at his game since the age of 14 and trains to be the best.

“He has never let his autism get in the way.”

Jack, who trains at Prestwick Tennis Centre, won gold in the men’s singles and bronze in the doubles.

Training partner Frances Smiley, diagnosed with dyspraxia as a child, claimed silver in the women’s singles.

The 20-year-old, of Prestwick, made it a glory double for the duo.

Her mum Christina said: “It’s been brilliant for South Ayrshire and both Prestwick and Troon have been fabulous in their support.

“Both Frances and Jack have done their country proud and it’s been an amazing experience for them.”

Jack told the Post: “It was even better that Frances won a medal too.

“We made lots of friends out there and it was super to do so well.”

Jack even earned a tweet of congratulations from his music idol Liam Gallagher.

Jean, who works at Troon gift shop The Herbary, said: “We arrived home on Friday and immediately celebrated Jack’s 21st so it’s been a whirlwindIt’s all very surreal.”

Herbary boss Claire O’Donnell added: “The whole town is so proud of Jack.

“He’s the nicest lad you could hope to meet and his effort and dedication are second to none.

“He deserves every bit of success coming his way.”
