War heroes will be honoured in South Ayrshire this weekend as Saturday marks the 76th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day).
After almost six years of fighting, Germany surrendered to the Allied forces on May 8, 1945, bringing an end to the conflict across Europe.
In Britain, thousands of civilians took to the streets to celebrate the news, eager to spend time with loved ones – a feeling which currently resonates with many of us.
Those who served during the Second World War will be commemorated as residents across the region pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Those wishing to carry out ‘in person’ commemorations are reminded to do so within Scottish Government guidance.
Eileen Howat, chief executive of South Ayrshire Council, said: “VE Day is a poignant day in history which should not be forgotten, so it’s important to spare a few moments to reflect upon the sacrifices of those who bravely fought for their country.
“Once again, COVID-19 restrictions mean that VE Day will be marked predominantly online this year.
“However, I’d urge anyone that is making plans to commemorate the day in person, to do so in line with Scottish Government guidance.”
South Ayrshire Council will commemorate VE Day virtually across their social media channels Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
