South Ayrshire councillors back call to ban public from buying fireworks

Councillors want to ban the public from buying fireworks.

Councillor Laura Brennan-Whitefield put forward a motion calling for the move to restrict the sale of fireworks.

All South Ayrshire politicians unanimously supported the call at full council.

SNP councillor Brennan-Whitefield said: “Fireworks have a negative effect on the public and some of our most vulnerable individuals in South Ayrshire and also our pets and local wildlife.

“I am proud that we as a council have taken this stance together.

“I am hopeful that restrictions on the sale of fireworks in some form will be in place soon.”

Loud bangs and flashes can be stressful for children with autism. And the noise can also cause fear and anxiety in animals.

Now council CEO Eileen Howat will write to the Scottish Government about the area’s stance on behalf of residents.

The Scottish Government carried out a consultation on fireworks.

Labour councillor Philip Saxton seconded the South Ayrshire Council motion from administration colleague, Councillor Brennan-Whitefield.

It said: “Council supports the view of 87 per cent of respondents to the recent Scottish Government consultation that the sale of fireworks to the general public should be banned.”
