Demolition of Burns House in Ayr will begin next week, Ayrshire Live can reveal.
The project, set to cost almost £1.3 million, will see the landscape of historic Burns Statue Square changed forever.
Council officials have said the project will involve each floor being taken down one at a time.
Traffic in the town will not be affected, but an exclusion zone will be set up for pedestrians to allow teams to work on site.
Reduced parking will still be available in front of the Odeon cinema.
A council spokesperson said: "The removal of the building will open up opportunities to enhance and develop this important gateway into the town."
