South Ayrshire Council cancels parking charges for December

There will be free parking in Ayr in the run-up to Christmas.

South Ayrshire Council has stopped the pay and display charges in the town for the whole of December.

Motorists can leave their vehicles for free in all street bays and council run car parks including Barns Crescent, Charlotte Street and Kyle Street.

It will make life easier for shoppers if First Minister Nicola Sturgeon allows non essential shops to reopen from Saturday. And residents would be able to visit restaurants and cafes during the build-up to the festive period.

South Ayrshire residents are due to find out tomorrow (Tuesday, 8 December) if the area will move out of Level 4.

Council leader Councillor Peter Henderson, SNP, said: "We have made car parking free to promote shops locally and assist businesses."

Welcoming the council decision to cancel fees, Ayr West Councillor Martin Dowey said: “It is good parking will be free for December. Hopefully we will move out of level 4. I would encourage everyone to shop local.

The Conservative group leader added: “I would prefer free parking all the time to help us recover from Covid-19 but this is a step in the right direction.”
