South Ayrshire Budget: Council tax to be set as proposals kept under wraps

Councillors are likely to freeze the council tax in South Ayrshire in the upcoming year’s budget, it is understood.

The current SNP, Labour and Independent administration are proposing a ‘carbon budget’ to tackle climate change.

Politicians are due to sit down and vote on the contents of a revenue budget of roughly more than £260 million during a private meeting on Thursday.

South Ayrshire Council has received £2.1 million from the Scottish Government to go towards keeping council tax at the same level as last year.

The carbon budget would look at what generates emissions and investigate how to reduce them among other measures.

Politicians are also due to decide on their pay for the upcoming 12 months.

South Ayrshire Council carried out an online survey on the budget as part of consultation.

However, it does not make the budget proposals available to the public in an agenda unlike neighbouring East Ayrshire and North Ayrshire local authorities.

Council leader Peter Henderson is due to comment on the budget after it is approved.

On Monday, East Ayrshire and North Ayrshire Council chief executives, finance bosses and council leaders held press briefings on their budgets online. Both local authorities are proposing a council tax freeze.

South Ayrshire opposition Conservative leader Martin Dowey said he won’t see the actual budget proposals until just before the meeting on Thursday.

When asked about a potential council tax freeze, he said it is anticipated.

South Ayrshire Council is due to receive a revenue grant of about £224m from the Scottish Government and about £9m for capital spend.

The £40m Ayr High Street swimming pool and a new Carrick Academy are among the council’s planned major capital investments over the next few years.

Ayr West Councillor Dowey said his party will present a shadow budget, which would see a new build leisure centre scrapped with the Citadel getting a £9m makeover.

He wants £6m spent on Ayr town centre and the esplanade among other proposals.
