South African ‘haapus’ arrives at Vashi market

NAVI MUMBAI: The initial lot of Malawi mangoes, identical to Alphonso mangoes, from South Africa arrived at the Mumbai APMC market on Friday.

A shipment of 230 boxes (a box weighs 3 kg) hit the market, which was sold at Rs 1,200 to 1,500 per kg at the wholesale yard. The next consignment is expected to arrive at the Vashi market over next weekend which may be sold a bit cheaper, said traders.

The season of these mangoes in the Indian market will be from mid-November to mid-December by the time the Indian Alphonso takes over the local market. The mangoes were sold to Pune and Mumbai traders. Each box comprises around 3 kg and has nine to 12 pieces.

“Prices will drop gradually once regular consignments arrive with increased quantities,” said Sanjay Pansare, head of ND Pansare & Sons.
