South African consortium undeterred in pursuit of Notts County despite rival bid

The South African consortium vying to complete a takeover at Notts County remain undeterred in their pursuit of the club - despite facing a rival bid from London property developers.

Reports in the national media on Wednesday claimed a group being led by Alex May was the frontrunner to buy the Magpies, who have been up for sale since January.

Little is known about May apart from him still being registered as a director of a company called Tram Sports which  was linked  with a bid to buy Chesterfield last season.

He is reportedly being backed by Raheem and Karim Virani, who own Cygnet Properties and Leisure PLC in London.

How many players are set to leave Notts County and which are under contract?

But the South African consortium say it has not stopped them from wanting to push a deal over the line, having already completed their due diligence of the club.

The group, which is also believed to include a British investor, are being advised by experienced football dealmaker Terry Pritchard of Charter HCP.

They submitted offers for the club   based on what division  they would be playing in before Notts were relegated from the Football League, and they are with the respective lawyers.

Further documentation they also requested from the club was received this week, and the consortium are still hopeful of pushing the deal through in order to help Notts  start preparations for next season.

£500,000 parachute payment will provide some relief to Notts County

The club is yet to release its retained list as the talks continue, and it is understood the players met boss Neal Ardley on Tuesday.

The players must receive a letter by the third Thursday in May informing them as to whether they will be released or offered a new contract.
