South Africa vs Nigeria LIVE: World Cup qualifier result, latest updates and reaction after Super Eagles held

South Africa vs Nigeria LIVE!

Nigeria were held to a frustrating draw in Bloemfontein tonight, drawing 1-1 with South Africa. Captain William Troost-Ekong opened the scoring with a clumsy own goal after 25 minutes, before Calvin Bassey equalised with a similarly clumsy header shortly before half-time, which stood despite ricocheting off his arm. A goalless second-half meant the points were shared.

It marks a significant blow to the Super Eagles’ World Cup qualification hopes - they now face a convoluted set of permutations if they are to attend the tournament in the United States. In the first place, they need group leaders South Africa to lose both of their remaining qualifiers, an unlikely prospect as they visit Zimbabwe and host Rwanda. Nigeria must also win both of their remaining outings and recover sufficient goal difference to surpass Bafana Bafana atop the group.

Nigeria will face Lesotho and Benin in their final two qualifiers, due to be played in the October international break. They will hope for Victor Osimhen, Ola Aina, and Wilfred Ndidi to return to fitness ahead of those crunch fixtures after all three picked up injuries in this camp. Catch up on all the action as it happened below with our dedicated match blog!

HALF TIME: South Africa 1-1 Nigeria

GOAL! South Africa 1-1 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:46 , Arthur Ferridge

44mins: Calvin Bassey heads home to equalise! He kicked off that whole move, getting the better of Nkota with a pair of deft Cruyff turns, before finding Lookman on the far side. He crossed back into the box, and Bassey rather clumsily finished. Not a pretty goal by any means, but he won’t care! The Super Eagles are level.

South Africa 1-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:44 , Arthur Ferridge

43mins: It will not be third time lucky for Nigeria. South Africa break, but Nwabali is quick off his line to sweep their counter-attack away.

South Africa 1-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:43 , Arthur Ferridge

42mins: Another Nigeria corner comes to nought, but they win a third immediately after.

South Africa 1-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:42 , Arthur Ferridge

South Africa 1-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:41 , Arthur Ferridge

40mins: Iwobi finds Simon out wide and he puts in a questionably early cross, which is quite simply cut out by the South Africa defence. Nigeria win a corner in the next phase, though - the first of the match.

South Africa 1-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:39 , Arthur Ferridge

37mins: South Africa are remarkably disciplined defensively. They attack in numbers, but reset so quickly after losing the ball. Nigeria are really struggling to take advantage in transition.

South Africa 1-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:36 , Arthur Ferridge

35mins: Ndidi loses possession on halfway and Lyle Foster is played in behind, but Frederick tracks back well to cover him off and see the ball out for a goal kick.

South Africa 1-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:35 , Arthur Ferridge

33mins: Nigeria lose the ball in midfield and Nkota is sent haring away down the right. He pulls it back for a cross, but Nigeria clear the threat. The Super Eagles are settling a bit now, but still struggling to play through the South Africa press.

South Africa 1-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:32 , Arthur Ferridge

30mins: Chelle is doing his best to motivate the Super Eagles, but they have hardly had a sight of the ball since going behind.

OWN GOAL! South Africa 1-0 Nigeria

24mins: Lightning has just been seen over the stadium, but for now, the referee is allowing us to play on.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:24 , Arthur Ferridge

23mins: Ropey defending from Nigeria here. Foster gets a ball into the six-yard box but the Super Eagles defender flubs his lines. Calvin Bassey is there to pick up the pieces and get the ball to safety, though, before a yellow-shirted South African can reach it.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:23 , Arthur Ferridge

22mins: Lightning is forecast this evening, and, as rain begins to fall on the Free State Stadium, we could see a weather delay here.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:21 , Arthur Ferridge

19mins: SAVE! Bright-Samuels loses the ball in his own penalty box and it is a snap shot from Appollis, but Nwabali parries it smartly.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:20 , Arthur Ferridge

19mins: Ngezana and Lookman are both booked. They came to blows after the former tackled the latter. A testy affair here in Bloemfontein.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:18 , Arthur Ferridge

16mins: Nigeria have really woken up after a slow start. They break at speed after winning the ball in the defensive third, but Osayi-Samuel is caught in the corner and dispossessed.

We then have some handbags after the face as Osayi-Samuel’s teammates feel he was unfairly tackled.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:13 , Arthur Ferridge

11mins: Surface seems to get the better of Simon as the ball bobbles up and he badly shanks his cross. The same then happens to Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Williams.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:11 , Arthur Ferridge

10mins: Aina is replaced by Birmingham City’s Bright Osayi-Samuel.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:10 , Arthur Ferridge

9mins: Play resumes with Aina off the pitch. We are awaiting confirmation, but he seems set to be replaced.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:09 , Arthur Ferridge

7mins: Scratch that - Aina sits back down and looks to be in a fair bit of pain. Look away, Ange Postecoglou.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:08 , Arthur Ferridge

6mins: Iwobi finds Aina out wide, but Kabini rushes over to tackle him. Aina looks to be in a bit of pain after the fact, but hops up to continue.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:06 , Arthur Ferridge

5mins: Nigeria, meanwhile, can barely keep ahold of the ball.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:06 , Arthur Ferridge

4mins: South Africa have started well here. Nkota heads over the bar after getting away from Bassey.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:04 , Arthur Ferridge

3mins: Nigeria deal with the South Africa set-piece. The delivery left a little to be desired - it was well behind the attacking line.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:03 , Arthur Ferridge

2mins: Bassey is blown up for pulling back Appollis. An early free-kick high on the right flank for the hosts.

South Africa 0-0 Nigeria

Tuesday 9 September 2025 17:03 , Arthur Ferridge

1mins: The Free State Stadium is, of course, a rugby ground, so it may not come as a surprise that the pitch here looks somewhat agricultural - the grass patchy and uneven, and still carries faded rugby markings. Let’s hope we don’t see any injuries here as a result.

Reminder of the XIs

Tuesday 9 September 2025 16:45 , Arthur Ferridge

With kick-off 15 minutes away, here’s a reminder of tonight’s starting XIs.

South Africa confirmed XI: Williams; Kabini, Mbokazi, Ngezana, Mdunyelwa; Aubaas, Mokoena; Appollis, Mbule, Nkota; Foster

Nigeria confirmed XI: Nwabali; Aina, Ndidi, Ekong, Lookman, Fredrick, Dele-Bashiru, Simon, Iwobi, Dessers, Bassey

Premier League representation

Tuesday 9 September 2025 16:36 , Arthur Ferridge

A fair few Premier League players have made the Nigeria squad today...

Nottingham Forest’s Ola Aina starts, as do Fulham pair Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.

In midfield is Wilfred Ndidi, until recently a Leicester player.

On the bench is Samu Chukwueze, on loan from AC Milan at Fulham, and newly signed Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare.

Foster on form?

Tuesday 9 September 2025 16:29 , Arthur Ferridge

Lyle Foster will hope to find his third goal of the season in Bloemfontein today - he has scored in both of his last two appearances.

He was on target for Burnley as they were beaten late by Manchester United before the international break, and scored in South Africa’s 3-0 win over Lesotho last week.

Teboho Mokoena returns

Tuesday 9 September 2025 16:27 , Arthur Ferridge

Teboho Mokoena’s name has dominated pre-match discourse.

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder appeared against Lesotho in March despite being suspended after accumulating too many yellow cards.

His case remains unresolved, though South Africa could face a World Cup qualification points penalty.

Nigeria boss Eric Chelle called on FIFA to reconsider the case: "I’m just a coach, I lead my team. What happened around my team and around this game… talk about the yellow card. There is an organisation called FIFA. FIFA need to manage it quickly.”

South Africa defence

Tuesday 9 September 2025 16:19 , Arthur Ferridge

Neither Thabo Moloisane nor Nyiko Mobbie make the South Africa XI after being injured last time out.

Mbokazi and Ngezana slot in on the right side of the back line.

Teboho Mokoena, the subject of some pre-match controversy (more on that later!) starts in midfield.

Burnley’s Lyle Foster leads the line.

Osimhen's understudy...

Tuesday 9 September 2025 16:12 , Arthur Ferridge

Cyriel Dessers gets the nod up top for Nigeria in Victor Osimhen’s absence!

Tolu Arokodare drops to the bench after scoring last time out.

South Africa vs Nigeria head to head

Tuesday 9 September 2025 15:50 , Arthur Ferridge

Nigeria hold the edge in this fixture historically, though the most recent meeting ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

In the reverse of tonight’s fixture, hosted in Uyo last June, goals from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Themba Zwayne cancelled each other out.

South Africa wins: 2

Nigeria wins: 8

Draws: 5

Group C standings

Tuesday 9 September 2025 15:40 , Arthur Ferridge

Relive the action: Nigeria 1-0 Rwanda

Tuesday 9 September 2025 15:30 , Arthur Ferridge

Nigeria opened the September international break with a 1-0 win over Rwanda.

The Super Eagles were dealt a massive blow in the first half when Victor Osimhen, who scored a brace in the reverse meeting back in March, limped off which means he is doubtful for Tuesday’s massive showdown against South Africa.

In the end it was substitute Tolu Arokodare's overhead kick early in the second half that secured a 1-0 home victory over Rwanda on Saturday.

Arokodare, recently signed by Wolves, got a touch to Ola Aina’s 52nd-minute effort, steering the ball in from just under the bar as Nigeria finally breached a tight visiting defence.

The win moves Nigeria up to third in the table, six points behind leaders South Africa with three matches remaining. Nigeria visit the South Africans on Tuesday in what could be the key fixture of the Group C campaign.

Tonight's stage

Tuesday 9 September 2025 15:20 , Arthur Ferridge

You may remember the Free State Stadium as the stage of one of the more forgettable matches in recent England history. The Three Lions were dumped out of the 2010 World Cup by Germany at this ground, losing 4-1.

Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski had Die Mannschaft 2-0 up after just 32 minutes before Matt Upson halved the deficit, but Thomas Müller’s second half brace condemned England to an early flight home.

More recently, the ground ahs become infamous for the dubious quality of its surface.

Speaking ahead of the match, South Africa boss Hugo Broos said: “I said already before we are not happy with the pitch. I said already before they said I don’t want to play here, it’s stupid because the pitch isn’t what we want to have.

“All the qualities we play, we play on very good pitches. This one is not so good, there is no reason why we play here against Nigeria, this is nonsense. We like to have a very good pitch like we had before.

“But, it’s not that bad, we all saw the game on Friday, we can’t really say it’s a very bad pitch. It’s not what it has to be but okay, it’s for both teams, we have to play the game tomorrow and that’s all.”

Standard Sport prediction

Tuesday 9 September 2025 15:10 , Arthur Ferridge

Despite the wealth of talent in the squad, Nigeria are habitual underperformers on the international stage. See last year’s 4-0 defeat to Sudan, and last week’s laborious win over Rwanda.

However, in a must-win match such as this, star power could be precisely what they need. Only victory will do, and proven talents such as Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman, who have played on some of Europe’s biggest stages, will hope to grab the match by the scruff of the neck.

Overcoming Victor Osimhen’s absence may prove their toughest test on the day, though injuries in the South Africa back line will open the door for Eric Chelle’s talented forwards to run free.

Nigeria to win, 2-1

South Africa team news

Tuesday 9 September 2025 15:00 , Arthur Ferridge

South Africa sustained two injuries in their win over Lesotho in midweek, and, worryingly, both came on the right side of defence.

Centre back Thabo Moloisane and right-back Nyiko Mobbie were both withdrawn with injuries, replaced by Khulumani Ndamane and Zuko Mdunyelwa, respectively.

It is unclear whether the pair will be fit to return this evening.

Bafana Bafana were knocked before the international break began after Patrick Maswanganyi and Ime Okon both withdrew from the squad with injuries.

Nigeria team news

Tuesday 9 September 2025 14:50 , Arthur Ferridge

Nigeria will be without their current top goalscorer in this match after Victor Osimhen picked up an ankle injury against Rwanda.

As a result, he has not travelled for the match. Tolu Arokodare, the only goalscorer in the Rwanda win, will likely be the one to take his place.

Cyriel Dessers, currently of Panathinaikos, could also take on the centre-forward role.
