South Africa v Argentina live: Springboks thrash Pumas behind record Feinberg-Mngomezulu display in Rugby Championship

South Africa thrashed Argentina 67-30 in a crazy contest Durban as they took control of a thrilling Rugby Championship with a remarkable win.

The Springboks scored nine tries as they dispatched the Pumas with a scintillating second half display and they are top of the table by a point from New Zealand, heading into the final round of matches. That means that if they secure another bonus-point win over Argentina in a Twickenham tussle next weekend, South Africa will win defend their crown and win back-to-back Rugby Championship titles for the first time.

They secured this thrashing on the back of a record performance from fly half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu who scored a brilliant hat-trick and notched 37 points – breaking Percy Montgomery’s previous single-game Springbok best of 35.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu was the beating heart that made the South Africa performance tick and even allowed them to overcome Cheslin Kolbe’s moment of madness in the first half when, with his side having a goal-line dropout, he inexplicably tried to drop-kick the ball to Feinberg-Mngomezulu to take it but it went straight into the hands of Santiago Chocobares who could run it in for the try.

South Africa have title within their grasp

18:23 , Luke Baker

Job done for the Springboks and they now top the Rugby Championship table on 15 points, one ahead of New Zealand in second on 14.

That means they just need to match the All Blacks next week to claim the crown, so a bonus-point win over Argentina at Twickenham would give them the crown and see them win back-to-back Rugby Championship titles for the first time.

FULL-TIME! South Africa 67-30 Argentina

18:16 , Luke Baker

A ludicrous, ludicrous match. But a brilliant win for the Springboks, who were superb.

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu was the star as he scored a hat-trick and notched 37 points - a Springbok record. Incredible performance by the scrum half.

South Africa now have the Rugby Championship title in their own hands, one point clear at the top. Another bonus-point win over Argentina in London next weekend and they’ll retain the title they won last year.

TRY! South Africa 67-30 Argentina (Pieter-Steph du Toit, 80 mins)

18:13 , Luke Baker

And one final try to finish it off as Pieter-Steph du Toit gets his second try of the game! A ninth for South Africa. He powers over under the sticks after a couple of phases.

And a nice moment for 23-year-old Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu as he adds the simple conversion and now has 37 points in the match, breaking Percy Montgomery’s record for the most by a Springbok in a single match! Wow

South Africa 60-30 Argentina, 77 mins

18:09 , Luke Baker

Garcia carted off and we’re back underway for the final few minutes. Let’s hope the Argentine scrum half is ok.

South Africa 60-30 Argentina, 76 mins

18:06 , Luke Baker

This is really worrying. Gonzalo Garcia is down and needing serious treatment. He was caught by his own man as Libbok accidentally knocked Petti back into him and this looks like a bad neck injury.

The game has stopped, all the medics, the injury cart and stretcher are on. They’re very carefully putting Garcia on the stretcher. This might take a while.

TRY! South Africa 60-30 Argentina (Manie Libbok, 75 mins)

18:04 , Luke Baker

The Argentina defence has fallen apart here. This is schoolboy stuff. Manie Libbok is losing his balance but weaves between three tacklers who make half-hearted efforts, he then dinks a chip over another defender, collects the ball and runs in for the try. Too easy.

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu adds the conversion and he’s now level with Percy Montgomery for the most points scored in a Springboks match, with 31! Is there time to break the record?

South Africa 53-30 Argentina, 70 mins

17:56 , Luke Baker

Carreras tries a neat offload to free Benitez Cruz but it’s forward and South Africa will have the scrum. Nothing going right for the Pumas in this second half

TRY! South Africa 53-30 Argentina (Pieter-Steph du Toit, 67 mins)

17:54 , Luke Baker

It's raining tries in Durban! Libbok with a lofted pass out to Hooker, on his home ground, and the winger steps inside one man before getting his hands free as he's tackled to offload out the back to Pieter-Steph du Toit who can crash over in the corner. Sublime.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu continues his ludicrously good day to nail the tricky conversion. It's seven tries to three now, so the bonus point is looking fairly safe for the Springboks now.

South Africa 46-30 Argentina, 64 mins

17:53 , Luke Baker

Willemse heads off as Manie Libbok enters the fray. South Africa’s playmakers have been sublime today

TRY! South Africa 46-30 Argentina (Morne van den Berg, 61 mins)

17:47 , Luke Baker

Brutal strength from De Allende! After Kolisi fights through one, two tackles, it’s quick hands and offloads to keep the Pumas off kilter. Then De Allende drags two defenders with him and is millimetres from the line.

Morne van den Berg, who has just come on, quickly picks up and dives for the line, dotting down. Bonus point back on for the Boks.

Bizarre conversion from Feinberg-Mngomezulu as it’s a simple kick from close range and he thumps it into the right upright. But it bounces off the inside and over the bar for the extra two points.

South Africa 39-30 Argentina, 59 mins

17:44 , Luke Baker

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is having a star-making performance here. Just highlight reel play after highlight reel play.

This time he dummies and twists his way between two defenders, shakes off another and bursts forward before finally being stopped just outside the 22. He tries an offload off the floor but it hits the deck.

Every time he touches the ball, there’s a buzz from the crowd.

NO TRY! South Africa 39-30 Argentina, 57 mins

17:43 , Luke Baker

Almost another score for the Boks. They swarm forward again, Feinberg-Mngomezulu with an exquisie kick through and Moodie dives on it int he back of the in-goal area.

We go to the TMO and the replay quickly shows the ball juuuust reached the dead-ball line before Moodie touched it down. Close!

TRY! South Africa 39-30 Argentina (Tomas Albornoz, 54 mins)

17:38 , Luke Baker

Erm, no they can’t... Argentina hit straight back. It’s superb by Cruz Mallia as he steps a defender and then offloads beautifully to Tomas Albornoz.

The replacement turns on the jets and weaves his way over for a third Pumas try. Five tries to three now, so no bonus point for the Boks as it stands, and Argentina are within nine points as the conversion lands. They’re still in this match...

South Africa 39-23 Argentina, 53 mins

17:36 , Luke Baker

The Boks are in bonus-point position now, having scored three more tries than Argentina. Can they see this out?

TRY! South Africa 39-23 Argentina (Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 52 mins)

17:35 , Luke Baker

South Africa are five metres out, run a couple of phases and are inches away now.

Oh, that’s exquisite! Gorgeous, audacious dummy by Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu leaves Montoya for dead and he’s across for his hat-trick try! A scintillating display from the fly half

South Africa 32-23 Argentina, 51 mins

17:33 , Luke Baker

Argentina having to make tackle after tackle, it's sapping their strength. Now another mistake.

Carreras spills the ball on his own 22. He then holds on on the floor to turn the knock-on into a penalty.

Kicked to the corner by the Boks...

South Africa 32-23 Argentina, 49 mins

17:31 , Luke Baker

You wouldn’t know the Boks are a man light here, they’re playing superbly. They attack again although this time the Pumas force a turnover and hold on, clearing towards halfway.

The sin-bin is over so back to a full complement for South Africa now.

South Africa 32-23 Argentina, 45 mins

17:27 , Luke Baker

Moodie with a brilliant hit! Times it perfectly, hits hard and dislodges the ball to force a knock-on. Superb.

The Springbok changes start from the scrum, with Marx off the field.

TRY! South Africa 32-23 Argentina (Cheslin Kolbe, 43 mins)

17:26 , Luke Baker

Cheslin Kolbe has his redemption! After his ludicrous mistake in- the first half, this is more like it from the superstar winger!

Willemse with a glorious take in the air to get things going. Then Feinberg-Mngomezulu with a bullet of a low, flat kick-pass out wide, right into the hands of Kolbe in full stride and he charges down the right flank for the try. The South African fly half has been immense today and that was more class.

He adds he conversion and the Boks are in full control now. They’re still down to 14 men given Marx’s yellow card remember!

KICK-OFF! South Africa 25-23 Argentina

17:24 , Luke Baker

Back underway in Durban. Can there be any more craziness?

HALF-TIME! South Africa 25-23 Argentina

17:09 , Luke Baker

And that’s half-time. What a crazy final 10 minutes of the half. Multiple tries and it means the Springboks lead at the break by two points. Should be a cracking second half

(AFP via Getty Images)

TRY! South Africa 25-23 Argentina (Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 40+5 mins)

17:07 , Luke Baker

And South Africa are over! What an insane end to the half this has been.

Great patience by the Boks and eventually Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu shows quick feet to dance past a defender and scoot over the line. Ten minutes ago he had zero tries in his Test career, now he has two!

Easy conversion under the sticks and South Africa lead at the break!

South Africa 18-23 Argentina, 40+3 mins

17:05 , Luke Baker

There’s time to kick-off and South Africa win the ball back through Moodie. They churn through the phases and are into the 22.

Pieter-Steph du Toit with a barrelling run after an offload and looks to have scored but is tackled just short. The Boks are pushing...

TRY! South Africa 18-23 Argentina (Penalty try, 40 mins)

17:03 , Luke Baker

And it’s a PENALTY TRY for Argentina! Malcolm Marx is ruled to have dragged that maul down illegally, it would have been a score otherwise and so it’s seven points to the Pumas.

And Malcolm Marx is sin-binned for his troubles, so South Africa will be down to 14 men for the next 10 minutes.

South Africa 18-16 Argentina, 39 mins

17:02 , Luke Baker

Frantic end to this half! Argentina have an attacking lineout and drive the maul over the line but the ball is held up.

But we’ll go for a TMO check...

TRY! South Africa 18-16 Argentina (Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 38 mins)

17:00 , Luke Baker

Immediate response by South Africa! That is superb.

Argentina are sleeping as Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu rifles a great kick behind the defensive line, towards the corner.

It looks as if it might go out for a 50-22 but instead sits up nicely, Moodie and Feinberg-Mngomezulu have chased hard, they get there before any Pumas defender and ti sits up for Feinberg-Mngomezulu to grab and dive over the line. Wow!

He then adds the tricky conversion to immediately put the Boks back ahead and wipe the memory of Kolbe’s moment of madness

TRY! South Africa 11-16 Argentina (Santiago Chocobares, 36 mins)

16:57 , Luke Baker

Oh no! Cheslin Kolbe what have you done?! A moment of madness from the winger.

Santiago Chocobares puts an aimless kick through and it runs into the in-goal area where Kolbe dots it down. Goal-line dropout South Africa.

Kolbe then mindlessly drop kicks the ball from out wide towards his own posts, trying to give it to a team-mate to take the kick. But that counts as the drop-out! And it bounces to Chocobares on the five-metre line, he gleefully grabs it and dives over the line for the try! Madness. Easy conversion and the Pumas lead

MISSED PENALTY! South Africa 11-9 Argentina, 35 mins

16:53 , Luke Baker

This is the toughest kick so far for Santiago Carreras. It’s 44 metres and out on the right. He curls the ball towards the posts but it drifts wide left. The Boks hold on to the lead

South Africa 11-9 Argentina, 34 mins

16:51 , Luke Baker

Thumping kick clear by Willemse - a huge boot from the full back who so impressed in the centres last time out.

But then more ill-discipline from the Boks who are off their feet. Carreras will kick for the posts from out wide on the right.

TRY! South Africa 11-9 Argentina (Malcolm Marx, 30 mins)

16:49 , Luke Baker

The Springboks kick to touch rather than taking the points. Can they use the momentum of that chalked-off score? Big opportunity.

Ball taken at the front of the lineout, Marx directs traffic from the back of the maul and THIS TIME THERE’S A TRY! Malcolm Marx steers the mass of men across the line and falls on the ball for the score. Well deserved

Conversion hits the post and stays out but South Africa hit the front

NO TRY! South Africa 6-9 Argentina, 29 mins

16:47 , Luke Baker

And South Africa convert. Nothing fancy about this as Eben Etzebeth comes on to crash ball and bursts between two tackles to drive over the line. Try!

But wait... TMO wants to check a potential Reinach knock on, it came at a ruck as Vivas stepped through and his foot contacted the ball. It definitely went forward but they rule that it’s illegal from Vivas, so no try but a penalty to South Africa just inside the 22

South Africa 6-9 Argentina, 28 mins

16:45 , Luke Baker

This is scrappy stuff. Garcia shanks a box-kick straight up int he air, South Africa knock on trying to claim it, loose passes follow from the Pumas before Carreras produces a good clearance kick over halfway.

But this is better from the Boks. They run seven phases and flick the ball wide to Kolbe to make some yards. Hooker then keeps the legs churning for good yards, deep in the 22

(AFP via Getty Images)

PENALTY! South Africa 6-9 Argentina (Santiago Carreras, 26 mins)

16:43 , Luke Baker

Santiago Carreras lines it up again. Slightly to the right of the posts, long distance and he lofts it through. Didn’t clear the bar by much but enough!

Argentina lead again. They’ll be delighted with this opening 26 minutes

South Africa 6-6 Argentina, 25 mins

16:40 , Luke Baker

To be fair to the Boks fly half, that would’ve been a 50-22, so he had to try and keep it in. And there’s no damage for the hosts as Montoya again loses the lineout, this one pilfered in the air.

And Argentina then give away a silly penalty as Kremer hits Marx when he’s down in a ruck. South Africa can boot to halfway but they’re pinged for offside from their own lineout as Feinberg-Mngomezulu left the lineout early. Sloppy and the Pumas can kick at goal...

South Africa 6-6 Argentina, 23 mins

16:38 , Luke Baker

Maybe that was the wrong decision... Montoya overthrows the lineout and South Africa are able to run a couple of phases in their own 22 before Reinach hoists a box-kick high into the air.

Carreras then fizzes a low kick, with no angle to work with, skidding into the 22 and Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s sliding attempt to collect only diverts it into touch.

South Africa 6-6 Argentina, 22 mins

16:36 , Luke Baker

Another high tackle, this time Thomas du Toit goes too high and it’s a Pumas penalty. But kicker Carreras is down receiving treatment and gets up limping.

He turns down an attempt at goal from one metre inside his own half though and kicks to touch instead

PENALTY! South Africa 6-6 Argentina (Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 19 mins)

16:33 , Luke Baker

We have a TMO intervention - Matera gets pinged for a high tackle on Wiese earlier in the play, so it sets up a kick at goal for Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

To the right of the sticks but not particularly long range and the Springboks fly half bangs it through. Six points apiece as we approach the end of the the first quarter.

South Africa 3-6 Argentina, 17 mins

16:30 , Luke Baker

Etzebeth tries to snaffle a breakdown turnover from the kick-off and although he doesn’t succeed, he disrupts Argentina and they give the ball back to the hosts shortly after.

A couple of phases before Feinberg-Mngomezulu sticks up a high bomb towards Hooker who outjumps his opposite number in the 22 but just knocks on as he lands. The try-line was waiting if he grabbed it cleanly.

PENALTY! South Africa 3-6 Argentina (Santiago Carreras, 15 mins)

16:28 , Luke Baker

It’s 44 metres away and bang central for Santiago Carreras. He starts it outside the right post but draws the ball back in and through the sticks.

The Pumas punishing early Boks ill-discipline.

South Africa 3-3 Argentina, 14 mins

16:27 , Luke Baker

Montoya knocks on in contact, enabling Feinberg-Mngomezulu to push the visitors back to halfway but prop Venter is caught offside to give Argentina another shot at the posts from long range...

South Africa 3-3 Argentina, 12 mins

16:25 , Luke Baker

Another scrum, this time in Argentina territory and this is an area the Boks will fancy exerting dominance. But this time, South Africa are pinged as it collapses. Referee Angus Gardner had a think about which way to go but pinged Thomas du Toit.

The Pumas have a platform in opposition territory to build from.

PENALTY! South Africa 3-3 Argentina (Santiago Carreras, 10 mins)

16:23 , Luke Baker

A bit of ill-discipline early on from the Springboks and they are pinged again on their own 22.

The Pumas signal for the posts and it’s a simple enough task for Santiago Carreras to slot between the uprights and level the game.

South Africa 3-0 Argentina, 7 mins

16:20 , Luke Baker

Argentina have a lineout to build from in Boks territory. It’s messy but Molina grabs the loose ball to salvage the situation.

Nice step from Carreras and he pokes a grubber kick through the gap that bounces into touch. Solid lineout by South Africa and they exit well

PENALTY! South Africa 3-0 Argentina (Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 4 mins)

16:18 , Luke Baker

The kick is from just inside the Argentina half, relatively straight. Lovely strike from Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu - sails between the posts with plenty to spare.

Springboks first on the board thanks to their scrum dominance

South Africa 0-0 Argentina, 3 mins

16:17 , Luke Baker

Springboks win an early scrum right on halfway and the pack makes a bit of a statement with a drive that splinters the Pumas forwards. But it comes before the ball is fed, so we’ve got a reset.

Argentina have a 20-odd kg weight advantage but they give away a penalty second time around and South Africa attack with freedom, Feinberg-Mngomezulu chipping to Kolbe out wide before the fly half hacks through the middle a couple of times but Cruz Mallia gratefully grabs the second of those.

Boks will go for the posts

Springboks show versatility again

15:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The versatility within the Springboks squad really is quite something. We saw it in Wellington last time out when Grant Williams went well on the wing, and that late upheaval on the bench only illustrates the utility options at Rassie Erasmus’s disposal. Jan-Hendrik Wessels can cover both hooker and prop while Marco van Staden’s ability to fill in at hooker enabled the world champions to call up Handre Pollard after Malcolm Marx’s injury at the last World Cup - which proved handy, of course.

Remember, too, that centre Andre Esterhuizen has played in the back row for significant periods this year - you’d say he’s a little unlucky not to get a start after a superb appearance off the bench last time out, but he has real value in that 23 shirt.

Santiago Carreras continues at fly half

15:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It looked like Tomas Albornoz had really seized the starting shirt earlier this year but his injury opened the door for Santiago Carreras to come back into the fly half mix for Argentina. The playmaker has responded well with a series of composed performances and again steers the ship today.

Carreras is bound for Bath after this campaign following a summer switch from Gloucester - and though Max Ojomoh did a fine job as a fill-in against Harlequins yesterday, head coach Johann van Graan admitted he was looking forward to Carreras arriving and Finn Russell coming through his Lions rest period.

SIya Kolisi compares Argentina

15:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

South Africa’s Rugby Championship clash with Argentina in Durban is like a semi-final according to captain Siya Kolisi, which is a good thing for the Springboks, who have turned knockout rugby into an art form in recent years.

The penultimate round of this year’s competition, where the Springboks are the defending champions, sees them host Argentina at King’s Park, before a rematch with the same opponents next weekend at Twickenham in London.

"For us, it’s not about putting on a show," Kolisi told reporters on Friday. "We are playing test rugby and this match is basically a semi-final. The focus is on getting the desired result."

South Africa won their quarter-final, semi-final and final at the 2023 Rugby World Cup each by a single point, showing nerves of steel and the ability to grind out results.

Team news - Argentina

15:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Felipe Contepomi makes three changes to the Argentina side that beat Australia in their last outing, all in the back five of the pack. Vastley experienced flanker Pablo Matera is joined by locks Franco Molina and Lucas Paulos in coming into the starting line-up, with plenty of quality on a bench that includes six forwards. Also among the replacements is fit-again fly half Tomas Albornoz, though Santiago Carrerras keeps the No 10 shirt.

Argentina XV: 1 Mayco Vivas, 2 Julian Montoya (capt.), 3 Joel Sclavi; 4 Franco Molina, 5 Lucas Paulos; 6 Pablo Matera, 7 Marcos Kremer, 8 Joaquin Oviedo; 9 Gonzalo Garcia, 10 Santiago Carreras; 11 Mateo Carreras, 12 Santiago Chocobares, 13 Lucio Cinti, 14 Rodrigo Isgro; 15 Juan Cruz Mallia.

Replacements: 16 Ignacio Ruiz, 17 Boris Wegner, 18 Francisco Coria Marchetti, 19 Guido Petti, 20 Pedro Rubiolo, 21 Juan Martin Gonzalez; 22 Simon Benitez Cruz, 23 Tomas Albornoz.

Team news - South Africa

15:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

South Africa welcome back lock Eben Etzebeth, who missed the record win over New Zealand. He replaces an injured Lood de Jager in the second row while Aphelele Fassi’s ankle surgery prompts a backline reshuffle: Damian Willemse shifts to full-back from inside centre, with Damian de Allende partnering Canan Moodie in the centres. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu went off early in Wellington but is fit to start at fly half, keeping Manie Libbok on the bench.

There was a late blow for Rassie Erasmus, too, with Ox Nche ruled out - Boan Venter is brought into the starting side with Jan Hendrik-Wessels, initially named as hooker cover, now the back-up loosehead and Marco van Staden - who has covered hooker in the past - brought in to the No 16 shirt.

South Africa XV: 1 Boan Venter, 2 Malcolm Marx, 3 Thomas du Toit; 4 Eben Etzebeth, 5 Ruan Nortje; 6 Siya Kolisi (capt.), 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 8 Jasper Wiese; 9 Cobus Reinach, 10 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu; 11 Ethan Hooker, 12 Damian de Allende, 13 Canan Moodie, 14 Cheslin Kolbe; 15 Damian Willemse.

Replacements: 16 Marco van Staden, 17 Jan-Hendrik Wessels, 18 Wilco Louw, 19 RG Snyman, 20 Kwagga Smith; 21 Morne van den Berg, 22 Manie Libbok, 23 Andre Esterhuizen.
