South Africa tour remains in doubt after Cricket Australia emergency meeting

The Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) is giving Cricket Australia (CA) until later in the week to revise its offer to players, before it takes further action.

The Australia A tour of South Africa remains in doubt due to the ongoing pay dispute between the players and CA.

The ACA says those players selected for the tour will go into training this week but will not sign contracts for the tour.

Around 230 cricketers are unemployed after the pay deal between CA and the ACA expired on Friday.

An emergency meeting was held at a Sydney hotel this morning, involving current players Usman Khawaja, Glenn Maxwell and Nic Maddinson, as well as ACA relations manager Simon Katich.

Australia captain Steve Smith, who is overseas, participated via video link, while former Test players Shane Watson and Ed Cowan also attended the meeting.

"It's a sad moment for Australian cricket," Watson said after the meeting.

Australia's elite cricketers were officially unemployed at midnight on Friday after a breakdown in talks to secure a new pay deal.

CA had acknowledged there would be no agreement reached before the previous deal expired, meaning almost 230 cricketers are out of contract.

With the exception of 70 domestic male cricketers, Australia's domestic players — both men and women — are off contract, although participants at the ongoing Women's World Cup in the United Kingdom will be paid for the duration of the tournament.

Players were also told last week any delay in reaching an MoU agreement from July 14 would mean they would not get back pay for the elapsed period.

The ACA has set up a hardship fund to support players in financial need — all except international men — covering all female players and male state-based players.
