South Africa rugby star receives eight-year ban after latest doping offence

South African rugby star Chiliboy Ralepelle has been banned from the sport for eight years after failing a drugs tests.

In January 2019, the hooker tested positive for Zeranol, a banned anabolic substance, during an out-of-competition test.

The 33-year-old has 21 days to appeal the ban but if it stands, it will effectively end his career.

Ralepelle has played 25 times for the Springboks, featuring at the 2011 Rugby World Cup and against the British and Irish Lions in 2009.

His last game was against England in 2018, also featuring in the Test against Wales that was played in Washington DC that summer.

It is not the first time he has been banned for doping offences.

In 2015, he was issued with a two-year ban after testing positive whilst recovering from a serious knee injury. Upon returning from that ban, he went on to pick up three further caps for the Springboks.

He also returned a positive test for a banned substance in 2010, although he was deemed not to be at fault and escaped a ban.
