South Africa get Coetzee boost for tri-series in Pakistan

Fit-again fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been named in a depleted South African squad for their opening fixture of the tri-series in Pakistan, which precedes the Champions Trophy.

Should he demonstrate match-fitness and complete recovery from his hamstring injury during the tri-series against New Zealand and hosts Pakistan, the pacer will likely step in for the injured Anrich Nortje in the Champions Trophy squad.

The injury had forced Coetzee out of the ongoing SA20 tournament in South Africa, where majority of the country's first-choice players are participating, as the league entered the playoffs stage on Tuesday.

Skipper Temba Bavuma and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder are the only two players from SA's Champions Trophy squad available for the team's opening match of the tri-series against New Zealand in Lahore on Monday.

SA's final squad composition will be determined after Wednesday's SA20 Eliminator match result.

After facing New Zealand on February 10, the Proteas will take on Pakistan in Karachi on February 12. The final will be played on February 14 in Karachi.

SA squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Eathan Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Gerald Coetzee, Junior Dala, Wiaan Mulder, Mihlali Mpongwana, Senuran Muthusamy, Gideon Peters, Meeka-eel Prince, Jason Smith and Kyle Verreynne (wk)
