Cameroon are into the last eight of the Africa Cup of Nations after an entertaining 2-1 win over South Africa in Rabat.

The Indomitable Lions continued their unbeaten run in this year’s competition, thanks to goals from Junior Tchamadeu and Christian Kofane.

Bafana Bafana set up a grandstand finish as substitute Evidence Makgopa notched on 88 minutes, but it was too little, too late for Hugo Broos’ side.

The Belgian was in the spotlight at the Al Medina Stadium, taking on his former employers, and he will see this as an opportunity missed, after South Africa dominated the first half.

Burnley striker Lyle Foster saw a goal chalked off for offside, while Oswin Appollis was lively off the right flank.

But it was Cameroon who opened the scoring on 34 minutes, as Stoke City right wing-back Tchamadeu slotted home unmarked after Bafana Bafana failed to clear the initial corner.

VAR cleared a potential offside check, and the Indomitable Lions were ahead against the run of play.

They were two up inside two minutes of the second period, as Christian Kofane scored with a powerful header after a sumptuous cross from Aboubakar Nagida.

South Africa pushed for that elusive goal, which finally came two minutes from time as Makgopa converted at the near post from a delicious delivery from Aubrey Modiba, but time ran out for them to find an equaliser, and also on their AFCON hopes.

David Pagou’s Cameroon move into the last eight, where they will face hosts Morocco, who defeated Tanzania 1-0 earlier in the day.
