The Big Ten has, indeed, pulled the plug on fall football.
The Big Ten will not play football this fall, multiple sources at multiple Big Ten schools with knowledge of the situation told the Free Press on Tuesday.
Michigan State players were pulled off the practice field, and one source said MSU coach Mel Tucker told the team the conference would try to resume play in the spring.
An official announcement is planned for 3 p.m.
Twelve of the 14 presidents said during a meeting Sunday they were in favor of cancelling the season, sources told the Free Press on Monday, and the conference planned to make an announcement to postpone or cancel the season Tuesday.
MSU president Samuel Stanley told an advisory group for Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday there would be no college football this fall, two other sources said. Stanley's remarks confirmed what the Free Press reported early that day.
Both Stanley (immunology and infectious diseases) and U-M president Mark Schlissel (immunology and internal medicine) are medical doctors.
The two programs were set to open the 10-game reconfigured Big Ten schedule at home on Sept. 5, the Wolverines to host Purdue and the Spartans to host Minnesota.
