FRISCO, Texas _ The Dallas Cowboys have made more progress in their contract negotiations with quarterback Dak Prescott than Amari Cooper, according to a source.
And while Cooper's demands were deemed shockingly high for a team that openly recognizes the floor of his contract is $16 million annually, the Cowboys seem to be nonplussed about making Prescott the highest paid player in team history.
That number will approach $30 million annually, according to a source, if not more.
While he didn't get into numbers, owner Jerry Jones reflected the team's attitude toward Prescott during a visit with former Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin on the Rich Eisen Show on Monday.
And he said emphatically, "I am confident we will get this (deal) done."
Jones said the Cowboys are sold on Prescott for the present and the future after lucking into him in the fourth round in 2016 and watching him lead the team to two division titles and 32 wins over the last three years.
"We are sold on Dak," Jones said. "We do want to have him for the long term. We think he is worthy of investing in for the long term. He is going into his fourth year in the NFL. When you look at the snaps he has had, the situations he has been in and how he has got here and you see he has performed, we see real upside in Dak.
"You don't have it all yet. We love the way he logically progresses through a game. You see when the going gets tough, when he's got to come from behind, when he turns it loose a little bit. You see him make those plays. He emboldens me to make a deal with him that puts him here for the long term."
There is no question the Cowboys want to get a deal down with Cooper as well. The contract talks are just not moving as fast as they are with Prescott.
The Cowboys would like to get both done before the start of the season. But there is no hard and fast timetable. Both are already under contract for 2019.
