CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ The Panthers plan to make a quarterback change on Sunday, starting rookie Will Grier in the team's Week 16 game at Indianapolis instead of the struggling Kyle Allen, according to a source.
Grier, who grew up in Davidson, will be making his first NFL start and taking his first regular-season snaps.
The third-round pick out of West Virginia did not put up an impressive preseason performance, completing 55.7% of his passes and throwing two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Allen has gone 6-7 as a starter in a roller coaster-type season. In his first four starts this year, Allen completed 65.6% of his passes, throwing seven touchdowns and zero interceptions. Since then he has completed 60.7% of his throws and thrown 10 touchdowns to 15 interceptions. He has also lost seven fumbles and has been sacked 45 times.
When asked Monday about who his starting quarterback would be vs. the Colts, interim head coach Perry Fewell said that the team would announce that news on Wednesday.
Allen was also asked for an interview Monday but declined comment, saying he would speak to reporters Wednesday instead.
