ARLINGTON, Texas — The Cowboys expect to be without wide receiver Michael Gallup for the remainder of this season.
Arguably their top deep threat is feared to have torn his ACL on a 21-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter of a 25-22 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, team owner Jerry Jones said. An MRI that was conducted Monday confirmed the club’s initial diagnosis, a source confirmed to The Dallas Morning News. The source said it was a clean tear of his left ACL.
Gallup’s season began with a left calf strain during the Sept. 9 opener at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, forcing him to miss seven games.
A left knee injury now likely ends it.
Gallup is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March. He totaled 35 catches for 445 yards and two touchdowns across nine games. On the injury, the 2018 third-round pick twisted and contorted his body to adjust to a back-shoulder pass and then leaping for the grab.
“You saw his play-making ability,” wide receiver Amari Cooper said. “He said that he felt it pop before he caught the ball. He’s tough enough to go up and still make the play, and he knew he was hurt. It speaks to how tough MG is, how much of a baller he is. It’s unfortunate that he went down like that. He’ll be all right, and I know he’ll come back better.”
Gallup is a popular player among Cowboys players.
He’s widely known for his positive disposition, often seen smiling around Ford Center at The Star. He walked alone from the locker room Sunday on crutches.
“You can’t get a better teammate than MG,” Prescott said. “Yeah, sick about it.”
