Source: Cowboys reach terms with New York Jets CB Maurice Canady on one-year deal

Re-signing Kai Forbath wasn't the only special teams move the Cowboys made Wednesday.

The team reached a one-year contract with cornerback Maurice Canady, a source said. His arrival isn't designed to make anyone forget about Byron Jones, whom the Miami Dolphins made on Monday the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. But he importantly adds depth to a shallow position while being able to contribute on special teams, potentially as a flyer in punt and kick coverage.

Cornerback C.J. Goodwin, who emerged as the Cowboys' top special teamer and flyer in 2019, became an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday.

His future with the organization is not known, but Canady provides more roster flexibility. Goodwin logged just 140 defensive snaps the past four years for three different NFL franchises. Canady, a 2016 sixth-round pick out of Virginia, played 728 snaps on defense during that span with the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets.

In total, Canady has started four of 32 games while totaling 80 tackles, one interception and six pass breakups.

He spent three-plus seasons in Baltimore before an eight-game stint with New York last year.
