Sounds Jewish: December 2008

This festive month I'm joined by comedian, writer and actor – and Yiddish expert - David Schneider, and playwright and theatre director Julia Pascal. We start the Chanukah celebrations early with our new game "I didn't know they were Jewish!" – played with the help of a dreidel and the lavish new coffee-table tome, A Book of Jews. Is Boris Becker really Jewish?

With the new production of Oliver! returning to the West End, I ask whether the gotta-pick-a-pocket-or-two Fagin is too much of an antisemitic caricature ever to be on the London stage.

What's Obama up to? He's appointed enough Jews to his team to start a White House synagogue. Should Jews be worried? Might this attract unwelcome attention? Jane Eisner, the editor of the Jewish American newspaper, The Forward, tells me to drop my Anglo-Jewish angst and calm down …

Plus the revival of Yiddish Twist, which combined post-war swing with the sound of the Yiddish music hall. The Jewish Community Centre for London has commissioned new work from musician Levez Lovas and his Yiddish Twist Orchestra. You'll love it.

Finally, to hell with the cholesterol, fry up the latkes and doughnuts - and dance to Songs in the Key of Chanukah. It's the latest project of Erran Baron Cohen, composer of the Borat soundtrack. You just have to see the video for the standout track, Dreidel.

Sounds Jewish is produced by the Jewish Community Centre for London.
