Sorting out the Steelers wide receivers ahead of roster cuts

When the Pittsburgh Steelers traded wide receiver Antonio Brown to the Oakland Raiders, there were genuine concerns about the wide receiver depth chart. But after four preseason games it really feels like this group has an opportunity to be a strength of the team rather than a weakness. But with only two days until the team has to trim their roster, there are several guys fighting for one or two spots on the depth chart.

Who is safe?

At this point, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Donte Moncrief, James Washington and Diontae Johnson are the only guys who are locks to make the final roster. Moncrief hasn’t done much in the preseason but he was brought in to have an impact in the regular season. That’s not to say he’s going to start but his spot on the roster is safe unless it’s injury-related.

Who isn’t safe?

As much as I hate to admit it, guys like Eli Rogers and Ryan Switzer are being pushed hard for the final two roster spots. Rogers and Switzer are fan favorites but you cannot deny the contributions of Johnny Holton and Diontae Spencer.

How will it all shake out?

At this point, if I were a betting man, I’d go with Switzer and Holton being the No. 5 and No. 6 guys on the depth chart. They are both excellent return men and while Holton offers more explosion in the passing game, Switzer is solid and dependable in those short routes between the hashes.
