‘Sorta like…a king could’: Donald Trump says he can do whatever he wants, including changing DC mayor in a new setback for democracy

Donald Trump will never admit to pushing for a dictatorship despite behaving like a King. However, that is not stopping people from calling his behaviour.

Since assuming office for a second term as the President of the United States this year, Donald Trump has done innumerable things that have had people facepalming, side-eyeing, laughing (at him) and abusing. Be it his rampant attacks on immigrant populations or his efforts at granting clemency to arrested individuals, or his promising economic aid to Argentina amidst growing crisis among soybean farmers in the US, he always had people on the edge of their seats with his whims.

However, in a recently resurfaced clip from September of this year, he is seen deliberating on acting upon a specific wish to replace the mayor of Washington, DC. Speaking to a panel of interviewers on the propaganda news channel Fox News, Trump remarked about taking the bold step if required and said:

“DC is a little bit different because I can federalise it if I want…We have actually more power in D.C., I can change the mayor, if I want, do whatever I want.”

He then continued to speak about the pushback Trump had received from the Mayor of DC during the initial days of him and his party trying to deploy troops there to conduct ICE raids, noting that after she saw the “results”, she was convinced. He also added that people thanked Trump for reducing the “crime” in their city, which he noted was “worse than Afghanistan.” How far removed from reality does a person have to be to make such a comment? Like seriously!

Trump’s insensitive comments garnered significant traction online, with conversations on X (formerly Twitter) being the most engaging. People were seeing right through his fear tactic manipulations and criticising him. One person pointed out the malice in his words and wrote:

“He can replace mayors he doesn’t like? Sorta like…a king could?

Another person called him “delusional” and “contemptible”, while another called him “Nazi.” Several others echoed similar sentiments as they continued to bash Trump.
