BBC pundit Garth Crooks believes Jordan Henderson's late Merseyside derby goal should have stood and it would have been a fitting way for the Liverpool skipper to finish the game.
Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were all on the scoresheet in a feisty match at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.
The points were shared in a dramatic 2-2 draw but the scoreline certainly didn't tell the full story, with a number of standout incidents occurring during the game.
One of those incidents came in the closing minutes as Henderson saw a late winner ruled out for a marginal offside after a VAR review.
The call has caused widespread debate across football with Liverpool having expressed the need for clarity on which part of Mane’s body was deemed offside the moment VAR chose to freeze the frame.
And in the eyes of Crooks, the goal should have stood, who also described Henderson as the driving force behind Liverpool's impressive display against the Premier League leaders.
“Whether you thought Liverpool were worthy of the victory or not, Jordan Henderson's injury-time goal should have stood on the basis that the offside decision was indistinguishable to the naked eye on the camera,” he told BBC Sport when selecting his team of the week.
“When we have to take the word of the video operator or the scientist when it is impossible to be definitive, then the referee must be the final arbiter, otherwise the game is in danger of spiralling out of control.
“Henderson was the driving force behind what should have been a Liverpool victory. Sorry, Evertonians.”
Crooks also selected Thiago Alcantara in his team of the week, with the former Barcelona star leading the way at Goodison with 79 passes and another game-high 99 touches of the ball.
He said: “What was Jordan Pickford doing on the field? The tackle on Virgil van Dijk was so villainous it should have come with a government health warning!
“The same was true of the tackle by Richarlison on Thiago Alcantara but that was appropriately dealt with by referee Michael Oliver.
“Thiago is clearly a class act and totally complements the way Liverpool play. He also handled the Merseyside derby like he'd been playing in them all his life.
“That said, when you've played in El Clasico [Barcelona v Real Madrid], there is little else to compare.”
