Soprano Catriona Morison to perform at St Michael’s Church in Linlithgow

Celebrated soprano Catriona Morison is set to perform in Linlithgow in the New Year.

Catriona Morison, from Edinburgh, was the first British winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, in 2017, taking both the Main Prize and the Song Prize (jointly).

She will sing a recital programme with Malcolm Martineau, who has been hailed as “one of the world’s finest accompanists” by the New York Observer.

Catriona studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and at the University of the Arts in Berlin, graduating with a Masters in Opera with Distinction. In 2015 she made her debut in Richard Strauss’ ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ with the Vienna Philharmonic under Franz Wesler-Möst.

The following season saw her become a member of the Thüringer Opera Studio, and she now sings at Oper Wuppertal.

“Catriona Morison is a great discovery, a singer with great charisma and simply angelically guided mezzo-soprano,” said Andreas Falentin, Concerti.

Malcolm Martineau comes from Edinburgh and studied at St Catherine’s College, Cambridge. He has worked with many of the world’s greatest singers.

He has appeared throughout Europe, in the USA and Australia, in many of the world’s major concert venues. He also has an extensive recording career.

The concert will be held on Saturday, January 18, at 7.30pm at St Michael’s Church in Linlithgow.

Also taking to the stage in February is the Scottish Sinfonia , which will perform a Orchestral Concert.

Both the Sinfonia and Linlithgow Arts Guild celebrate their 50th anniversaries with this concert.

The orchestra is a highly successful mixture of professional players and amateurs, with an age range of 17 to 70, all united in one common aim: to make music of the highest standard of which they are capable.

The Sinfonia was founded by Neil Mantle, who has conducted it ever since in over 200 concerts. It has delighted audiences at Linlithgow Arts Guild on a number of occasions.

This takes place on Saturday, February 8, at 7.30pm, also at St Michael’s Parish Church Linlithgow.

And in March, the Kosmos Ensemble will wow audiences at Linlithgow Academy Theatre with Wild Gypsy fiddling, emotive Jewish and Greek music glide seamlessly into hot-blooded tango.

Alongside interpretations of Japanese, Polish and Sephardic songs, new arrangements by and for the ensemble, and with references to classical composers including Bach, Brahms and Sarasate.

The trio will perform on Saturday, March 14, at 7.30pm.

The Kosmos Ensemble is re-defining the relationship between classical and world music.
