Sophisticated scam warning as sneaky fraudsters using 'two part' fraud technique to con people

An urgent alert has been issued as cunning scammers have been using a sophisticated "two part" fraud technique to con people.

A Dublin woman has warned people after she received a strange phone call regarding two suspicious transactions.

The caller had the last 4 digits of a bank card, a name and a landline number.

They asked her for a mobile number and when she refused to comply she was then "transferred" to a manager on O'Connell Street who told them they would receive a verification call in a while from the bank to cancel the transaction.

Speaking on a local Dalkey Facebook group, she said: "Phone call received this morning about two supposedly suspect transactions.

"The caller had the last four digits of a bank card, a name, and a landline number.

"They gave the name of a bank and gave an address in Molesworth Street but could not supply an eircode.

"They seemed to be looking for a mobile number. When that was not forthcoming the call was 'transferred' to a manager in O'Connell Street.

She continued: "They were telling us that we would get a verification call in a while from the bank to cancel the transaction, and we could give them all our information then - obviously doing a two part scam to create trust and therefore take more information.

"After 28 minutes and a tag team effort on our side, they terminated the call not getting anything."

"The message is, the people making the call were well resourced, were working from a robust and relatively detailed script."

She urged people to inform their neighbours and loved ones about the scam saying: "A credible bank will always find another way to make contact if it is a real issue."
