Sophie Turner responds to protest criticism: ‘This is about changing the system’

Over the weekend, Sophie Turner and her husband, Joe Jonas, grabbed some homemade signs and joined Black Lives Matter protestors in Los Angeles.

Turner, 24, shared a series of photos from the protest to her Instagram, including one of herself dressed in pajama pants and a hoodie and holding a sign that read, “White silence is violence.”

Turner also shared a short video clip that Jonas posted on his own Instagram, which showed the actress and the other protestors kneeling on the ground while they said, “No justice, no peace.”

Many of Turner’s Instagram followers shared messages of support. One wrote, “This queen is out here protesting while pregnant. An icon,” they added, referring to reports that Turner and Jonas are expecting their first child together.

But as is always the case, some people did not agree with Turner or the protests that have been taking place across the nation and around the world.

As People reported, a since-deleted exchange between Turner and another Instagram user took place after they wrote, “I mean they’ve been arrested and charged with murder so there’s justice, soooo can we have peace now?”

No justice, no peace #BlackLivesMatter

The comment was in reference to the four Minneapolis police officers involved in George Floyd’s murder, who have since been arrested and face charges for their actions.

Turner reportedly responded to the comment, explaining the reason behind the Black Lives Matter movement and the continued protests. “This isn’t just about those four cops,” she wrote.

“This is about Breonna Taylor, this is about Trayvon Martin, this is about Eric Garner, this is about the systemic racism that black people have faced for hundreds and hundreds of years. This is about changing the system. Justice will be done when society reflects our beliefs that we are all equal. Until then there should be no peace,” Turner explained.

This isn’t the first time Turner has used her platform to support a larger message. Towards the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the Game of Thrones actress encouraged her fans to follow stay-at-home orders.

She was even pictured wearing her face mask and appeared to be practicing social-distancing rules by maintaining a safe distance from others at the protest.
