Sophie's at Dublin's Dean Hotel assures customers swings of Maria Bailey infamy will not be removed after being temporarily taken down

Swing enthusiasts were on the edge of their seats after the famous swings in Sophie's Restaurant in Dublin's Dean Hotel were temporarily taken down.

There were fears that the infamous swings were leaving the building for good after pictures surfaced on social media of workmen removing them from their fixtures.

But the restaurant moved to assure customers that their popular swings were only removed for a private event and would be not being going anywhere.

It comes after embattled Fine Gael TD Maria Bailey withdrew her personal injury claim against the Harcourt Street hotel following a fall from one of the swings in 2015.

The Dun Laoghaire deputy revealed at the weekend she'd dropped the action against the Dean Hotel, insisting she had only taken it to recoup medical costs for an injured back.

Dozens took to social media to complain as photos of the Instagrammable swings being removed circulated online.

One person said: "They are taking the swings down. This is why we can't have nice things."

Another said: "But they can't be taking them down, they are a tourist attraction now."

A third added: "Aw, I've always wanted to have a go on them and now I never will."

A third chimed in saying: "Where is everyone going to go to take their Instagram pictures now?"

Happily, both Sophie's and The Dean soon issued statements to clarify that the swings were staying put.

A spokesperson for Sophie's tweeted: "The picture taken of the swings being removed yesterday was for a private hire event.

"We have no intention of removing the swings from Sophie's, don’t worry."

The Dean Hotel responded to another tweeter, saying: "The swings aren't gone! We had a private event in Sophie's last night and the entrance area was used for a welcome desk so the swings were removed temporarily. They'll be back soon!"

Speaking on RTE's The Sean O'Rourke Show earlier this week, Ms Bailey said she was "never looking" for compensation and was only seeking the cost of her medical bills.

The Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown representative added that she was told information about the case would not be made public until she was before the courts.

She said: "This has been a hugely distressing intrusive abusive week that my family and I have succumbed to, completely unwarranted through leaked documents."
