Sophie Ellis-Bextor goes to bed in tears after gruelling Children in Need challenge raises £1m

An exhausted Sophie Ellis-Bextor went to bed in tears after completing a gruelling dance challenge for Children in Need and raising over £1millon in the process.

The singer who sky rocketed to music when she topped the charts with Groovejet in 2000 kept millions of us entertained during lockdown with her Kitchen Discos, which broadcast live every Friday on her social media channels.

In them, Sophie performed her songs and a whole host of covers including Madonna's Like A Prayer, which she sang while supporting Steps in Newcastle last week.

And, having gone head to head with Victoria Beckham in the charts some 21 years ago now, Sophie took on another challenge on Tuesday when she took part in a day-long danceathon for the annual BBC event.

The Murder on the Dancefloor songstress became emotional as the clocked ticked down to herald the end of her fundraiser, before learning that the total had soared well over the £800,000 mark.

And then, takin g to Twitter a few hours later, before she grabbed some well deserved sleep, Sophie posted: "I’ve just finally got to bed but I’m crying again because the total donations are now £1,009,137 - and they keep coming in.

"To everyone who has donated, messaged, watched - even for a tiny bit - or supported in ANY way, you have given me what I needed to get through this."

She added: "Fun, tough, extraordinary…. All the above but mainly super special and I know what that money means to BBC Children in Need.

"I’m going to have a little kip now but from me and my aching bones THANK YOU"
