FIA chief Jean Todt has promised an investigation into the crash at Sunday's Formula Three Grand Prix in Macau that left German driver Sophia Floersch with a fractured spine.
The 17-year-old was travelling at about 171mph when her car left the track and crashed, travelling backwards and airbourne before eventually coming to rest by a photographers’ pit.
The teenager was conscious when taken to hospital, from where she tweeted that she was “fine” and would undergo surgery today.
Todt responded to the crash, saying: “After the serious incident, the FIA is mobilised to help those involved and analyse what happened. We will monitor the situation and make the necessary conclusions.”
Japanese driver Sho Tsuboi, whose car was hit by Floersch’s, was taken to hospital but later discharged, while two photographers and one track marshal were also injured and treated in hospital.
