Sooryavanshi shakes up RR strategy despite Jaiswal’s ₹18 crore price tag

The buzz around Sooryavanshi intensified when Zubin Bharucha, Director of Cricket for Rajasthan Royals, revealed that the franchise had earmarked ₹10 crore the moment their scouts witnessed him in trials. Such a bold move for a teenager underscores the magnitude of belief in his abilities.

Comparisons and playful exaggerations have only added to his mystique. Some have likened his batting to artificial intelligence, while England star Jos Buttler jokingly remarked that he might not even be human. Yet beneath the humor lies genuine awe at a talent many believe Indian cricket hasn’t seen since the rise of Sachin Tendulkar in the late 1980s.

The First Glimpses of Greatness

One of the earliest believers in Sooryavanshi was Samar Qadri, a former first-class cricketer and Rajasthan Royals scout. He recalls being stunned when he bowled to the youngster during a match in Patna.

Qadri, a leg-spinner experienced in handling left-handed batters, expected to challenge the teenager. Instead, Sooryavanshi effortlessly struck him over the covers, showcasing remarkable skill and composure for someone barely in his teens.

Recognizing his potential, Qadri recommended him to Bharucha. Soon after, Sooryavanshi attended trials in Chennai, where he reportedly scored over 150 runs in just 60 balls—an innings that left multiple scouts in disbelief. Beyond his aggressive strokeplay, what stood out was his calm demeanor and genuine love for the game, particularly red-ball cricket.

The Trial That Changed Everything

For Bharucha, the defining moment came during Rajasthan Royals’ trials. He recalls a sequence that convinced him he was witnessing something truly special.

After observing impressive knocks from established names like Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sooryavanshi walked in to face a sharp left-arm seamer. Expectations were that the youngster might struggle—but instead, he dispatched his very first ball for a six.

Still skeptical, Bharucha arranged an additional, more rigorous test. Using taller, quicker side-arm bowlers, he instructed them to push the youngster to his limits. Sooryavanshi calmly left a few deliveries before smashing the next one straight into the sight screen.

That moment sealed it.

Bharucha immediately informed the franchise leadership, declaring Sooryavanshi the most exciting talent he had seen since Tendulkar. He even shared his assessment with Rahul Dravid, further emphasizing the seriousness of his conviction.

A Talent That Reshaped Strategy

The emergence of Sooryavanshi forced Rajasthan Royals to rethink their auction strategy just days before the IPL 2025 mega auction. Internal conversations reveal how dramatically plans shifted.

Originally, the franchise had reserved a significant budget for strengthening their opening lineup. However, Bharucha suggested redirecting those funds toward securing the young prodigy, even comparing him favorably to Jaiswal at a similar stage.

Despite the internal hype, Rajasthan Royals managed to acquire Sooryavanshi for just ₹1.1 crore—a move that now looks like one of the biggest bargains in recent IPL history.

The Road Ahead

While Sooryavanshi is still years away from fully realizing his potential, the early signs are extraordinary. His fearless batting, maturity beyond his years, and adaptability across formats have already set him apart.

Cricket has seen prodigies before, but few have generated this level of anticipation so early in their journey. Whether he fulfills the towering expectations remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is no longer just a promising youngster; he is already a phenomenon in the making.
