It was a good night for Radio 1 and some of the biggest names in BBC radio. It was almost as good for Emap's west midlands rock station, Kerrang!. Welcome to tonight's Sony radio awards.
Radio 1's renaissance appears to be complete after it won national radio station of the year at the ceremony at London's Grosvenor House hotel, beating Radio 2 and GCap's Xfm. There were Sony gold awards for Radio 1 breakfast DJ Chris Moyles, afternoon host Scott Mills, and a double for early evening presenter Zane Lowe.
Radio 1 was the most successful music station of the night, beaten only by Radio 4 which, as ever, cleaned up in the speech categories.
The BBC's Chris Evans and Terry Wogan were also celebrating. Wogan won the biggest prize of the night, the Gold Award, while Evans, controversially switched from Saturday afternoons to become Radio 2's new drivetime host, won music radio personality of the year.
It was also a good night for Emap's Kerrang. Launched just two years ago, it won station of the year in its category (1 million listeners-plus) and a gold award for the Rick Shaw morning show.
So who were the other winners? Former Capital Radio chief Richard Park - better known to some of you as a judge on BBC1's Fame Academy - won station programmer of the year for his work at Emap's Magic 105.4, while Stephen Nolan, a new signing for Radio 5 Live, won speech programme of the year for his show on BBC Radio Ulster.
Radio 4's seven wins included PM presenter Eddie Mair, for speech broadcaster of the year; Angus Stickler, who was named news journalist of the year; and the news and current affairs programme award for its weekday 6pm bulletin.
GCap Media beat Radio 4 and 5 Live to win the breaking news prize, for its coverage of the London bombings, while LBC beat Capital and 5 Live, among others, for the live event award for its coverage of the University Boat Race. 5 Live won just one prize - for Saturday morning panel game, Fighting Talk.
