Sony World Photography Awards 2019: Nadav Kander's portraits, from Barack Obama to Eddie Redmayne

Nadav Kander’s portraits were seen by the world when he photographed President-elect Donald Trump for the 2016 Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

Recognisable for his high definition, dramatic edge, his picture of Trump became just one of hundreds of well-known faces in his portfolio.

He has photographed other world leaders from Barack Obama to Prince Charles, as well as internationally famous actors, artists, musicians, writers and sportspeople. Eddie Redmayne, Steve McQueen, Jodie Foster, Patrick Stewart, Lily Allen and Daniel Kaluuya are among his other subjects.

Now, his works will be on display in the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House, for which he has been made recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Photography award.

The display at Somerset house will show a number of these portraits alongside his landscape images and lesser known series – including figure studies and moving image works – for a retrospective from the 30 year career of the prolific artist.

Speaking about the works in the exhibition, he said: “Whether it’s an image of an estuary or a portrait, I’m looking for a reaction from the viewer mirroring my feelings and reactions, that will encourage them to – even without knowing it sometimes – ask questions and react within their own bodies.”

Kander will give a public talk at 7pm on April 18 when the exhibition opens.

The Sony World Photography Awards exhibition runs from April 1 – May 6, somersethouse.org.uk
